Migrating virtual machines

After completing the pre-migration checks, you can refer to the subsequent steps to migrate virtual machines. During migration, Arcfra Migration Tool will first perform a full data migration from source virtual machines to destination virtual machines. After the full data migration is completed, if the source virtual machines are in the Running state, you can choose to migrate incremental data or shut down the virtual machines.

  • Migrating incremental data

After completing the full data migration, if you are unable to shut down or forget to shut down the source virtual machines promptly, a large amount of incremental data will be generated on the source virtual machines. You can choose to manually migrate incremental data. Transferring the incremental data before shutting down the source virtual machine will reduce the data transfer time after the source virtual machine is shut down.

  • Shutting down the virtual machine

Shut down the source virtual machine to complete the final data migration.

Prerequisites

  • Acquire the root account and its password of the target cluster in advance.
  • Obtain the username and password of the user with an administrator role for managing the virtual machines to be migrated on the VMware vCenter platform. You can refer to the vCenter Server System Roles section in the VMware documentation to learn about the administrator role.

Precaution

At the beginning and end of a migration task, Arcfra Migration Tool will create and delete snapshots of the migrated virtual machines. During the process of creating and deleting snapshots, the migrated virtual machines might be temporarily frozen and experience performance degradation, which may affect the business operations running on it. Therefore, it is recommended to perform virtual machine migration during idle time.
