Permanently deleting virtual machines

Prerequisite and impact

Prerequisite for permanently deleting a virtual machine

  • The virtual machine is in the Shutdown state.
  • The virtual machine is not the object of any snapshot plan.
  • The recycle bin function is not enabled in the cluster where the virtual machine resides.

Impact of permanently deleting a virtual machine

  • Permanently deleting a virtual machine will also permanently delete the snapshots of its associated virtual volumes by default. The data capacity exclusively occupied by the virtual machine will be released after deletion.
  • If a virtual machine has GPU passthrough devices, vGPUs, SR-IOV passthrough NICs, PCI passthrough NICs, or USB devices mounted, these devices will be unmounted when the virtual machine is deleted.
  • If a virtual machine has shared virtual volumes mounted, the shared volumes will not be deleted when the virtual machine is deleted.

Permanently deleting a single virtual machine

Procedure

  1. Select a virtual machine to be deleted in the virtual machine list to open its details panel.

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) at the top of the virtual machine details panel and select Delete permanently. You can also locate the virtual machine to be deleted, click the ellipsis (...) on its right, and select Delete permanently.

  3. In the pop-up Delete VM permanently dialog box, enter the name of the virtual machine to confirm the deletion, and click Delete permanently to delete the virtual machine.

During the process, you can check the task progress and whether the deletion is successful in the Task center.

Permanently deleting virtual machines in batches

Procedure

  1. Select multiple virtual machines to be deleted in the virtual machine list, and the batch operation buttons will appear above the list.

    • If the recycle bin function is not enabled in the clusters where the selected virtual machines reside, the Delete permanently button will be displayed.
    • If the clusters where certain selected virtual machines reside have enabled recycle bin, the Delete button will be displayed, and the number of virtual machines that can be moved to the recycle bin and permanently deleted will be displayed in its submenu respectively.
  2. Select Delete permanently or Delete > Delete permanently above the virtual machine list.

  3. In the Delete VM permanently dialog box, enter the virtual machine names to confirm the deletion, and click Delete permanently to delete the virtual machines. During the process, you can check the task progress and whether the deletion is successful in the Task center.

    Information:

Among the selected virtual machines, if some are in the clusters that have enabled the recycle bin, only those in the clusters that have not enabled the recycle bin will be permanently deleted.
