Among all Windows operating system versions compatible with AVE virtual machines, only Windows Server 2003 exclusively supports IDE bus and does not support Arcfra VMTools. Therefore, after installation, you must manually load the NIC and memory drivers.

Prerequisites

  • The virtual machine's system disk bus type is IDE and the boot order is the first.
  • The virtual machine already has a CD-ROM with the Windows Server 2003 ISO image mounted.
  • The virtual machine already has a CD-ROM with the Arcfra VMTools ISO image mounted.

Step 1: Installing Windows Server 2003 for the virtual machine

  1. In the virtual machine details panel, click Start to start the virtual machine.

  2. Click Terminal to open the terminal. Refer to Microsoft's official Windows Installer documentation to complete the installation of Windows Server 2003.

After installing the operating system, refer to the next steps to install the NIC driver and memory driver for the virtual machine.

Step 2: Installing the NIC driver for the virtual machine

  1. Select Ethernet Controller in the Device Manager list. Right-click and select Update Driver. Follow the prompts in the pop-up Hardware Update Wizard dialog box and click Next.

  2. When selecting the location to install the driver, check Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and then click Next.

  3. In the pop-up dialog box, check Include this location in the search and click Browse. In the pop-up Browse for Folder window, select the virtual disk with the Arcfra VMTools ISO image loaded. Select driver > NetKVM > 2k3 > amd64 folders in sequence, and click OK.

  4. Click Next, and the virtual machine will start loading the NIC driver. After the installation is complete, a prompt box will pop up. Click Finish. After successful installation, you can view the network adapter in the list of device managers.

Step 3: Installing the memory Balloon driver for the virtual machine

  1. Double-click the virtual disk with the Arcfra VMTools ISO image loaded, and copy all the Balloon folders in the driver folder to the root directory of the C drive.

  2. Select PCI Device in the device manager list. Right-click and select Update Driver. Follow the prompts in the pop-up Hardware Update Wizard dialog box and click Next.

  3. When selecting the location to install the driver, check Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and then click Next.

  4. In the pop-up dialog box, check Include this location in the search, click Browse, select the C drive, and select Balloon > 2k3 > amd64 folders in order, and click Ok.

  5. Click Next, and the virtual machine will start loading the memory Balloon driver. After the installation is complete, a prompt box will pop up. Click Finish. After successful installation, you can view the VirtIO Balloon driver in the device list.

  6. Run CMD with administrator privileges, go to the directory where the Balloon driver is located, and execute the blnsvr.exe -i command.

After the command is executed successfully, you can see that the Balloon Service is running in the Windows service list.

Next steps

If the virtual machine's graphics card is of the QXL type, you need to install a QXL driver after installing the operating system. For detailed procedure, refer to Installing the QXL driver on a Windows virtual machine.
