Each time a backup plan is executed, a restore point is created for each virtual machine included in the backup plan. You can restore a virtual machine through restore points.
Virtual machines can be restored in two ways: restore the virtual machine in place and rebuild the virtual machine.
Restore the virtual machine in place
It refers to restoring the virtual volume data to the state when the restore point was created without changing the virtual machine configuration. Note that the restored virtual machine will replace the original virtual machine.
Note:
In any of the following scenarios, you cannot restore the virtual machine in place:
- The original virtual machine is in the
Suspend
,Updating
, orUnknown
state.- The original virtual machine has been deleted, moved to the recycle bin, migrated to another cluster, or converted into a VM template.
- The original virtual machine adds or removes a virtual volume or expands the virtual volume after the restore point is created.
- The cluster where the original virtual machine resides has been removed from AOC.
Rebuild the virtual machine
It refers to creating a virtual machine using a restore point while retaining the original virtual machine. The configuration and virtual volume data of the new virtual machine are the same as those of the original virtual machine when the restore point was generated.
Precautions
When rebuilding a virtual machine, if the target cluster is using an expired trial license, the virtual machine restore will fail.
Procedure
Log in to AOC, on the Backup & DR page, click Backup plan and select a backup plan to access its details page.
Select the virtual machine you want to restore, and the restore point to use.
Click Restore, and in the pop-up Restore virtual machine page, select the restore mode and enter configuration information as needed.
Restore the virtual machine in place
Restore the virtual volume data to the state when the restore point was created without changing the virtual machine configuration.
Note:
If the virtual machine you want to restore in place is in the
running
state, it will be shut down before restore.
Rebuild the virtual machine
Create a virtual machine using the restore point. The configuration and virtual volume data of the new virtual machine are the same as those of the original virtual machine when the restore point was created.
VM basic information
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
Target cluster | Select the target cluster to rebuild the virtual machine. You can select a ACOS (AVE) cluster as the cluster of the original virtual machine. |
Target host | Select the target host to rebuild the virtual machine. You can either choose a specific host within the target cluster or choose the default setting, Automatically place VM on proper host. |
New VM name | Enter a name for the rebuilt virtual machine, ensuring it is unique within the target cluster. By default, the name will be the same as the original virtual machine's name when the restore point was created. |
Note:
If you select another cluster to create the virtual machine other than the cluster of the original virtual machine, ensure that the backup service is connected to the storage network of the target cluster.
Network mapping
When rebuilding the virtual machine, you need to set the VM network mapping for it to ensure the proper service operation. Configure the corresponding VM network in the target cluster for the rebuilt virtual machine based on the VM network of the original virtual machine. It is recommended to select a VM network with the same VLAN type (Access or Trunk) as the source.
Choose whether to enable Automatic start after restore, which is enabled by default.
Click Restore to start the restore job. If needed, you can stop the restore job in the AOC task center.
